Alexander Grinberg

Born in 1885, started photographing in early 1900s.

In 1908 was awarded a silver medal in the all-Russian photo exhibition and the gold medal in the international photo exhibition in Dresden.

Was a successful photographer, got famous of his nudes and picture of dancers.

In 1929 his erotic photography was declared inappropriate for Soviet Union, but Grinbergkept exhibiting his works. He was eventually sentence to five years in Gulag labor camps for distribution of pornography. He served his time from 1936 to 1939.

Was also the author of three films: “Story of Seven who were hanged” (1921); “A Descendant of an Arab” (1926) and “Three Friends and an Invention” (1927).

Grinberg’s photographs are held by major museum and private collections around the world. He died in 1979.
