In Chinese, the gourd is called hulu (wulu). The first character hu (葫) is the homophone of the word “to protect or guard” (hu 护) and the word for “blessing” (hu 祜). In the old days, hulu were tied onto the back of small children, in case they fall into a stream, river or sea.

 Wulu represents good health, prosperity, long life, wealth and abundance in Chinese culture. It is also called the “gourd of longevity" and is believed to remove negative energy that gives birth to illness and bad luck. The center of this gold, rock crystal and sapphires ring is a rare ice jadeite carved in the shape of wulu.
