Decoding Dickson Yewn’s Jewellery

This is the second exhibition dedicated to Dickson Yewn presented by Eurus Gallery. The first, Fair and Square, took its name from one of the artist’s most recognisable forms — his square rings.

This is the second exhibition dedicated to Dickson Yewn presented by Eurus Gallery. The first, Fair and Square, took its name from one of the artist’s most recognisable forms — his square rings.

This time, the exhibition looks at Yewn’s work from another perspective: how a miniature wearable object can contain an entire layer of Chinese history, philosophy, architecture and material culture.

One example is his Flower Fairies series. At first glance, it is light and playful: flowers are paired with miniature vases carved from precious and ornamental stones. Behind this apparent simplicity, however, lies a complex system of references.

The twelve flowers correspond to the twelve months and refer to the traditional Chinese concept of the Twelve Flower Fairies. The miniature vases are equally deliberate: their silhouettes reproduce recognisable historic forms of Chinese porcelain from different periods. The vases can be changed, reversing the familiar ritual of arranging flowers: instead of replacing the flowers in a vase, Yewn invites the wearer to keep the flower and change the vase.

This is only one of the many stories hidden within the works presented at the exhibition. Throughout Yewn’s practice, familiar forms become carriers of historical references, architectural details, symbols and cultural codes, all compressed into objects small enough to be worn.

Dickson Yewn will come to Bangkok for the exhibition, giving visitors an opportunity to discover these stories together with the artist himself.
