The 'Lattice' in the title 'Floral Lattice' symbolises the window through which Chinese intellectuals see the world. A group of Chinese literati own traditional Chinese gardens, and the 'Floral' in the title represents insects and all other life forms that come and go.
Using his signature latticework, Yewn imagines small windows looking out on to these courtyard gardens and, inspired by their outline and form, he has created his Nostalgia collection by imagining a person taking a stroll along the garden path. He conjectures on what they might see through the small windows (or more precisely, in Chinese, a 'hole-window,' which decorates a long 'walking corridor'). Could it be peach blossom caught in the lattice? A landscape? Or an illicit meeting? Even creatures are seen in his collection; a magical world of small reptiles, frogs and the dung beetle.
Another important aspect of decoration inside and outside the home is the lantern. Simply made, it was an object assuring light; made using more expensive materials, it could be used for special Chinese festivals. The Imperial Lantern collection was Yewn's response to this tradition.
