The Circle of Life

From March 19 to 22, Eurus Gallery in Bangkok will host two exhibitions simultaneously. The first is a preview of the Chronotope project, created for one of the two major Hong Kong contemporary art fairs, Art Central. You can read more about this project here

The second exhibition, titled The Circle of Life, delves into the cycles of nature and the essence of life itself. This project resonates deeply with the Chronotope in its exploration of time and space. Among the highlights of the exhibition is a unique piece in the form of a tree by Alessio Boschi. This tree can be worn as a ring or displayed on a stone pedestal engraved with a design of tree roots. The tree presents different perspectives: one side depicts winter, with branches adorned with ice and snow; another signifies awakening in spring, showcasing young greenery and leaves. In summer, the leaves become a richer shade of green, and apples appear on the branches. As autumn arrives, the apples turn red while the leaves begin to yellow, with the cycle continuing into the next winter.

The project Circle of Life, which gave the name to the exhibition was created by Epic Jewellery and Ilya Fedotov-Fyodorov. It is not merely about rebirth in nature. It’s a philosophical exploration of the meaning of life, its fragility, value, and the uniqueness of every living being. For instance, a golden beetle — traditional in Southeast Asia — transforms in this project into a fantastical ring made of anodized titanium, embellished with diamonds and featuring a dome carved from natural crystal.

The works of Hong Kong artist Dickon Yewn featured in the exhibition range from ironic archival pieces from the series Life of Circle to serious, contemplative works, such as a bracelet made of gold and silver, showcasing a unique metal hammering technique rediscovered by Yewn. This bracelet symbolizes awakening and the beginning of life, with its upper part adorned with a motif of blooming cherry blossoms and the inner side featuring a geometric pattern representing cracking ice.

Life embodies love, as expressed in the artpiece Eternal Kiss by Alexander Laut and the necklace The Heart, a collaboration between Epic Jewellery and Olga Tobreluts. An extraordinarily profound philosophical statement is captured in the brooch Thryptomene by Chinese artist Richard Wu. Thryptomene is a shrub with delicate flowers that have a very short lifespan; as one flower blooms, another wilts, and this fleeting moment has been immortalized by the artist.

Additionally, the exhibition will showcase a new series of paintings by contemporary artist Irina Petrakova. Her works explore themes of identity, the memory of place, and both personal and historical remembrance. Memory, after all, is what keeps the past alive.
